Mountaineering on track for Unesco

The decision is expected in less than a month in Bogota, and seems very good for the classification of mountaineering to the intangible cultural heritage (PCI) of Unesco. On November 8, the opinion of the reviewing experts was favourable.

Carried by three countries (France, Italy, Switzerland), the application of the mountain practice has been accepted and will be put to the vote of the14th session of the Intergovernmental Committee on the Safeguarding of the ICP, on 11 and 12 December in the Colombian capital. The Committee is made up of 24 members representing the 178 member states of the ICH Convention.

The registration, if it materializes, should enlighten the practice in the eyes of the general public and stimulate new vocations that the various Alpine Clubs have already prepared to welcome. Another long-term undertaking will then begin, an integral part of the process: the implementation of safeguard measures, and thus the development of mountaineering. They are part of a commitment by the three states to "respect a fundamental principle: free access to the high mountains."
